Here are the top stories today in Miami:

1. Derek Kaplan, also known as Fireman Derek, is the man behind the Wynwood dessert staple. Kaplan started off by selling pies as a side gig, making about 25 to 30 pies a week when he was not busy saving lives. He then retired to go full-time and is now on the brink of opening his third bake shop in South Florida. (NBC Miami)

2. The Miami Diaper Bank is suffering from a shortage due to Hurricane Ian supply chain problems. The nonprofit is seeking donations and volunteers to help the situation. Chief Executive Director Gabriela Rojas worries that diapers could become a scarce item as the supply chain struggles to recover. (CBS Miami)

3. A judge has dismissed a felony battery charge against a Homestead corrections officer for pushing a handcuffed man headfirst into a wall. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Cristina Miranda cited Florida’s “stand your ground” law as valid for the officer’s actions, which were captured on surveillance footage. (WSVN)

4. A Fort Myers man, arrested weeks before Hurricane Ian hit for allegedly pointing a gun at police during a chase, unsuccessfully asked a Broward County judge to let him go home and survey the damage to his home. The man claims to have been under the influence of drugs when the incident occurred. He remains in prison. (NBC Miami)

5. Miami-Dade County has filed an application to obtain permits and begin reconstruction of the Coconut Grove Playhouse, according to a report by Miami Today. Over $20 million has been allocated to the project so far. The Coconut Grove Playhouse permanently closed its doors 16 years ago. (Miami Today)
